A favorite destination of our local guides, the waterfalls 3.5 Km north of town also offer our most challenging hike. One may start right in town, if the full 9K route is desired. Some others may elect to forgo the on-road approach, which takes you just past the Majagua turn-off, and begin at the trail-head for a 3.4-K out-and-back trip. Take note, this will include 3 K of the most demanding hikeable trail in the Dominican Republic.
After passing the Majagua turn-off, proceed across the bridge over the river and the trail-head should be visible at your right. Once off-road, one progresses through some natural grazing lands and quickly picks up a single-track trail that skirts and rolls through a few foot-hills before reaching a secluded coulee that houses just over 160 vertical meters of cascading water and pools. The path crosses the river twice and the trail begins a gain of 210 vertical meters in about 1K. The trail hugs the south-facing slope of the coulee as it ascends next to the falls. With the help of the aqua-duct that also affords Pedro Sanchez with it’s constant flow of mountain spring water, you pass through very dense portions of a moist jungle to a point near the top of the falls. Wildlife and flora on the trip is quite diverse and breathtaking. Be sure to note the amazing variety of lizards as well as the occasional snake glowing green in the cliffs along the falls.
Upon arriving at the top, do not hesitate to swim and jump into the pools as directed by your guides. There are many thrilling drops, but also the danger of entering a shallow pool from a height. If you remembered your camera, don’t hesitate to ask your guide to film you as you "salta" into one of the many pools.
Just a reminder, this hike can be difficult to treacherous. A guide is heavily recommended, especially given the prevalence of bad plants that can cause you itch and bruises. They can be found in the village or scheduled ahead-of-time by contacting Cielo-Pedro Sanchez. The cost is usually around a thousand pesos per guide for the 3-5 hour excursion. Groups in excess of four are usually better-off with more than one guide. Cost may seem high, but is rather a reflection of the effort necessary to maintain trail accessibility in this lush valley. Un destino favorito de los guías locales, los saltos están a 3.5 km al norte del pueblo y ofrecen nuestro camino más estimulante. Se puede iniciar allí mismo en el pueblo, si desea los 9K de la ruta entera. Otros pueden omitir caminar en la carretera, el cual pasa la entrada de Majagua, y comenzar la senda para una vuelta de 3.4 K. Note que este camino incluye 3K del camino más difícil en el país.
Después de pasar la entrada de Majagua, diríjase al otro lado del puente y el sendero está visible a la derecha. Una vez que haya dejado la carretera, se sigue caminando por el sendero lleno de naturaleza, y pronto se encuentra el camino que deambula a través de varias lomas antes de llegar al desfiladero que tiene más que 160 metros verticales de cascadas y charcos.
